13 March 2025
Kumul Minerals Holdings Limited (KMHL) joined the PNG Kidney Foundation on 13 March 2025 to commemorate World Kidney Day – a global campaign held annually on the second Thursday of March to raise awareness about kidney health and reduce the impact of kidney disease worldwide.
The PNG Kidney Foundation (PNGKF), a non-profit organisation committed to providing affordable dialysis treatment, raising awareness, and supporting patients affected by kidney disease, is at the forefront of kidney health advocacy in PNG. In its mission to save lives, PNGKF has received generous support from KMHL which has assisted in carrying out public awareness and education initiatives.
Kidney disease is a growing health concern in PNG which requires more public awareness and intervention from government and corporate organisations. In PNG, cases of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure have been rising, largely due to factors such as:
· Diabetes and hypertension – these are the leading causes of kidney disease worldwide, and PNG is no exception. Poor lifestyle choices, including unhealthy diets and lack of exercise, have contributed to an increase in these conditions
· Limited access to healthcare – many Papua New Guineans do not have regular access to health check-ups, leading to late diagnosis and reduced treatment options
· High cost of dialysis – Kidney failure requires dialysis, a lifesaving but expensive treatment which many families struggle to afford
KMHL Managing Director Sarimu Kanu expressed the company’s commitment to supporting PNGKF in boosting health literacy on this important day.
“We recognise the impact of kidney disease in PNG, and we have partnered with PNGKF to support their advocacy efforts, and we look forward to partnering with them on future initiatives,” said Kanu.
World Kidney Day calls for holistic health policies, funding for kidney care, and kidney health education. It also calls for everyone to have equal access to screenings, early diagnosis, and quality treatment.
